Your QSC CX amplifiers and KW181 subs are on borrowed time
If your church, school, or business has a rack of QSC CX amplifiers or a QSC KW181 subwoofer, this one is for you. QSC has discontinued both product lines, and the factory's ability to repair them is ending. These have been workhorses for years. Many are still running fine today. But when one finally fails, the repair you're used to may no longer be available, and the options left aren't great.
Which models are affected
Check the model number on the front or back panel of your gear, and note whether you have a CX4, CX4T, CX6, CX6T, CX12, or CX12T. QSC no longer repairs these. There is limited service for CX302, CX502, CX702, CX902, CX1102, CX302V, CX602V, CX1202V, CX204V, CX254, CX404, CX168, CX108V. KW181s will have limited service. "Limited service" means repairs are best-effort and depend on available replacement parts. Once those parts run out, the factory can’t fix the unit. QSC also does not service any product 25 years or older.

When one fails, you have two choices
With factory repair off the table, a failed CX amplifier or KW181 leaves you with two real options.
1. Buy a used unit. It looks cheaper up front, but it's a gamble:
You don't know how hard it was run, how hot it got, or whether it was dropped.
Fans, capacitors, and power supplies wear out with age, and a used unit is just as old as the one that died.
There's no warranty, and when the replacement fails, it can't be repaired either.
You may end up paying twice: once for the used unit, and again for a modern replacement a year later.
2. Replace it with a modern equivalent. This is the option we recommend. Current amplifiers and active subwoofers come with a full manufacturer warranty and factory support for years to come. Many also add features the old gear never had, such as built-in DSP, network monitoring, lower power draw, and lighter weight.
Replacing CX amplifiers: Crown, LEA, Powersoft, and QSC
Advanced Sound KC can recommend a current amplifier from four premium brands that fits your existing speakers and rack:
Crown: a long-standing American amplifier name trusted in churches, schools, and commercial installs.
LEA Professional: an American company building network-connected installation amplifiers with remote monitoring built in.
Powersoft: high-efficiency amplifiers known for packing a lot of power into very little rack space.
QSC: if you'd like to stay with the brand you know, QSC's current amplifier lines are a natural fit.
The right match depends on how your system is wired. We'll look at whether your speakers run on 70V/100V distributed lines or low-impedance outputs, how many channels you need, and how much power each zone requires.
Replacing the KW181: JBL, QSC, and RCF
The KW181 was a popular 18-inch powered subwoofer for worship teams, school gyms, and portable PA rigs. Today's active subwoofers match or beat it on output, and many are lighter and easier to move.
We can recommend a comparable active subwoofer from:
JBL: an American pro audio brand with powered subwoofers for both portable and installed systems.
QSC: QSC's current KS Series includes the KS118, a powered 18-inch subwoofer in the same class as the KW181.
RCF: active subwoofers with strong low-end output and solid build quality.
We'll help you pick one that matches your existing tops and the size of your room.
Plan now, not on Sunday morning
Amplifiers and subwoofers rarely fail at a convenient time. It's usually right before a service, a graduation, or a big event. Planning your replacement now means you choose the gear and the timing, instead of scrambling for whatever used unit you can find.
Contact Advanced Sound KC. Send us the model numbers of your QSC CX amplifiers or KW181 subwoofers, and we'll recommend modern replacements from Crown, LEA, Powersoft, QSC, JBL, or RCF that fit your system and budget. We design, sell, and service audio, video, lighting, and security systems for churches, businesses, schools, and homes across the Kansas City area.
